I was recently having a discussion with one of my clients about the concept of network virtualization. During the conversation, in attempting to explain the business case, I referred to data center virtualization. This was met with some confusion, with the customer explaining that when he heard that term, his immediate thought was of server and desktop virtualization; that had already been done, hadn’t it? So this is a fair call, and I asked him: “What would be a better umbrella term for the network virtualization business cases?” He suggested that, for him at least, it made more sense to use the term software defined data center (SDDC). The reasoning was that the virtualizing of the network was more than just virtualizing the network within a private cloud environment.
